Serenity in the mountains
Nestled in a tranquil valley, Ohara Sanso offers authentic Japanese experiences with delicious meals and a stunning onsen. The staff was friendly and eager to assist with our needs.
However, the late check-out time and limited access to showers were a challenge. The traditional futons took some adjusting, and the travel distance from Kyoto became inconvenient at night.

The countryside setting provided a refreshing escape from city life, and the room was both simple and cozy, perfectly reflecting traditional Japanese aesthetics. The meals were exceptional, featuring fresh ingredients and beautifully presented dishes that left no room for hunger. However, the shared bathroom arrangement was a bit inconvenient, and limited shower hours made it challenging to freshen up at times. The heating in the room was efficient, and staff were consistently kind and accommodating, going out of their way to assist, such as offering transport to the bus station.

We recently stayed two nights and loved the peacefulness. The traditional meals were a highlight—each dish was expertly prepared, and the onsen experience was unforgettable. We also had a fantastic time exploring the local sights in Ohara, especially the scenic drive, which was beautiful.

I enjoyed creating my own bed with clean bedding and experienced the outdoor onsen which was a welcome change from my busy days in Japan. The area is quiet, and I appreciated the fast WiFi throughout the building. During my stay, I explored the local sights and tried ice cucumbers on a stick, which was an interesting snack. This peaceful getaway provided a nice break.
The shared bathroom setup was not ideal, and I found it challenging to access showers outside bathing hours. Also, locating the ryokan took some effort with my luggage.

We had an amazing time at this ryokan with my friends! The serene location was a perfect escape, and we loved exploring nearby temples. The onsen was heated and relaxing, and the meals—especially breakfast—were delicious and beautifully presented. Don't miss the hot pot dinner, it's a fun experience!
One downside was that the shuttle service only runs a limited schedule around check-in and check-out, which made exploring a bit inconvenient. We had to walk more than expected, but it wasn’t a huge deal.
